Problem
A river that is 200 m wide flows steadily toward the east at 1.5 m/s. A kayaker can paddle at 2.5 m/s relative to the water.
Provide complete solutions with clearly labeled steps.
(a) The kayaker wishes to land directly across from the starting point on the opposite bank. Determine the angle, measured relative to due north, at which the kayaker must head the kayak.
(b) Calculate the time required for the crossing when the kayaker uses the heading found in part (a).
(c) For the same heading, determine the magnitude of the kayak’s ground speed.
(d) Suppose instead the kayaker simply heads due north. Calculate how far downstream (east) of the directly opposite point the kayaker will reach the far bank.
