Problem

A stone is attached to a spring balance and weighed in air. The balance reads 4.9 N4.9\,\text{N}. The stone is then completely immersed in a measuring cylinder that initially contains 50 cm350\,\text{cm}^{3} of water. The water level rises to 70 cm370\,\text{cm}^{3}. Take the acceleration due to gravity g=9.8 m s−2g=9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the mass of the stone. (ii) Determine the volume of the stone. (iii) Hence find the density of the stone in kg m−3\text{kg\,m}^{-3} and also in g cm−3\text{g\,cm}^{-3}.
