Problem

On a distant planet, scientists decide to redefine their fundamental units so that • 11 planetary mass unit =2 kg=2\,\text{kg} • 11 planetary length unit =0.50 m=0.50\,\text{m} • 11 planetary time unit =13 s=\dfrac13\,\text{s} Surface tension has the dimensional formula [M1L0T−2][M^1L^{0}T^{-2}]. A liquid on Earth has a surface tension of 0.070 N m−10.070\,\text{N\,m}^{-1} in SI units. (i) Determine the conversion factor needed to express surface tension measurements from SI units to the planetary units. (ii) Hence, compute the numerical value of the surface tension of the same liquid when expressed in the planetary unit system. (iii) If all other experimental apparatus on the planet is calibrated in planetary units, discuss any practical advantages or disadvantages of this redefinition for measuring surface tension accurately.
