Problem

A siphon made of uniform tubing is to be used to transfer freshwater from an open reservoir to a container located at a lower elevation. Atmospheric pressure is 1.0×105 Pa1.0\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}, and the density of freshwater is 1.0×103 kg m−31.0\times10^{3}\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}. To avoid cavitation, the absolute pressure anywhere inside the tube must remain non-negative (that is, greater than or equal to a perfect vacuum). The water surface in the reservoir is to be located a vertical distance HH below the highest point of the siphon. (a) Determine the maximum value of HH that will still allow the siphon to operate without the pressure in the tube dropping below zero absolute pressure. (b) The vapor pressure of water at room temperature is approximately 2.0×103 Pa2.0\times10^{3}\,\text{Pa}. Re-evaluate the maximum allowable value of HH if the absolute pressure in the tube must remain above this vapor pressure to prevent boiling.
