Problem

An electric locomotive of mass 2.0×105 kg2.0\times10^{5}\,\text{kg} starts from rest on a straight horizontal track. The traction motors draw electrical power at the rate of 1.5 MW1.5\,\text{MW}. Twenty per cent of this electrical input is lost as heat; the remainder appears as useful mechanical power accelerating the train. (a) Convert the useful mechanical power into horsepower (1 hp=746 W1\,\text{hp}=746\,\text{W}). (b) Assuming the useful power remains constant, calculate the speed attained by the train after 60 s60\,\text{s}. (c) Compute the numerical value of the train's kinetic energy at that instant.
