Problem

(a) Define a simple microscope and a compound microscope. (b) State any three fundamental differences between these two instruments with respect to: (i) number of optical elements used, (ii) sequence in which the images are formed (real/virtual, erect/inverted), and (iii) typical range of magnifying power obtainable. (c) Explain, with suitable reasoning, why a compound microscope is able to achieve a much higher overall magnification than a simple microscope even though its eyepiece generally has a larger focal length than the single lens used in a simple microscope.
