Problem

A student plans to connect three capacitors, C1=5 μFC_1=5\,\mu\mathrm{F}, C2=10 μFC_2=10\,\mu\mathrm{F}, and C3=15 μFC_3=15\,\mu\mathrm{F}, in series. By mistake, the student connects C3C_3 in parallel with C2C_2 and then places this parallel combination in series with C1C_1. (i) Draw a neat labelled sketch of the actual connection made by the student. (ii) Calculate the equivalent capacitance of the circuit actually obtained. (iii) Compute the percentage error between the capacitance calculated in part (ii) and the correct capacitance that would have resulted from a proper series connection of the three capacitors. (iv) Suggest one concrete corrective step the student must take to obtain the intended series combination.
