Problem

While mapping building stone deposits, a field team measures the mass and volume of several irregular granite samples. The data are listed below.
SampleVolume (cm3^{3})Mass (g)
115.242.1
224.869.1
331.587.2
446.0125.5
552.3139.8
660.1210.0
Assume the measurement uncertainties are small relative to the quantities shown. (a) Plot the data on a mass-versus-volume graph. Identify any point that does not appear to follow the overall linear trend and provide a brief justification for either retaining or discarding that point in subsequent analysis. (b) Using an appropriate subset of the data, determine the equation of the best-fit straight line. Clearly state the numerical value and units of the slope. (c) Convert the slope obtained in part (b) to SI base units and report the density of the granite to three significant figures. (d) The accepted density of granite is 2.70 g/cm32.70\,\text{g/cm}^{3}. Calculate the percent difference between your experimental value and the accepted value, and discuss what the comparison suggests about the reliability of the field measurements.
