A small cottage is fitted with three identical 60 W lamps, one ceiling fan of 120 W, and an electric water heater of 1000 W. Every appliance is marked for operation at 240 V and is connected to the mains through separate switches.
(i) Calculate the current drawn from the mains when all the appliances are switched ON simultaneously.
(ii) The main fuse of the cottage is rated at 5 A. Decide whether the fuse will blow when all appliances operate together and support your answer with a calculation.
(iii) Suppose, by mistake, the three lamps are wired in series with each other while the fan and the heater remain correctly connected in parallel. Calculate the current through the lamps in this incorrect wiring and determine the power consumed by each lamp. Compare the illumination obtained in this case with that in the correct parallel wiring.
