Problem

A uniform electric field of magnitude E0E_0 is directed along the +x-axis, and a point charge QQ is placed at the origin. (a) Show that any point on the x-axis where the net electric field becomes zero satisfies x=±kQE0x=\pm\sqrt{\dfrac{kQ}{E_0}}, where k=1/(4πε0)k=1/(4\pi\varepsilon_0). (b) If Q=−5.0 nCQ=-5.0\,\text{nC} and E0=2.0×104 N C−1E_0=2.0\times10^{4}\,\text{N C}^{-1} (directed along +x), state on which side of the origin the equilibrium point lies and calculate its distance from the origin.
