Problem

A conducting sphere S1S_1 of radius rr is attached to an insulating handle. Another conducting sphere S2S_2 of radius RR, where R>rR>r, is mounted on an insulating stand. Sphere S2S_2 is initially uncharged. Sphere S1S_1 is given charge qq, brought into contact with S2S_2, and removed. Sphere S1S_1 is then recharged to qq, brought into contact with S2S_2, and removed. This procedure is repeated nn times. (a) Find the electrostatic energy of S2S_2 after nn such contacts with S1S_1. (b) What is the limiting value of this energy as n→∞n\to\infty?
