Problem

A 150.0 g sample of liquid water at 20.0 ∘C20.0\,^\circ\text{C} is placed in an insulated calorimeter. A 100.0 g block of copper, initially at 95.0 ∘C95.0\,^\circ\text{C}, is quickly transferred into the water and the system is sealed from its surroundings. Ignore any heat absorbed by the calorimeter itself. The specific heat capacities are 4.18 J g−1 ∘C−14.18\,\text{J\,g}^{-1}\,^{\circ}\text{C}^{-1} for water and 0.385 J g−1 ∘C−10.385\,\text{J\,g}^{-1}\,^{\circ}\text{C}^{-1} for copper. (a) Calculate the final equilibrium temperature of the copper–water system, expressing your answer to the proper number of significant figures. (b) Determine the quantity of thermal energy (in joules) gained by the water during the process. (c) For both the copper and the water, state the algebraic sign (positive or negative) of the energy change and briefly relate each sign to the direction of energy flow.
