Problem

An electric iron is designed to operate on 220 V220\,\text{V} mains and contains a heating element of resistance 44 Ω44\,\Omega. (i) Calculate the steady current drawn by the iron when it is switched on. (ii) If the iron is left connected for 15 min15\,\text{min}, determine the electrical energy consumed in kilowatt-hours. (iii) The same element is accidentally connected to a 110 V110\,\text{V} supply. Compute the current in this case and comment on whether the iron will heat effectively.
