Problem

A drone takes off from point O on level ground and completes four successive straight-line stages as described below. Stage 1: 3.0 km due east at a constant speed of 18 km h−1^{-1}. Stage 2: 4.0 km due north at a constant speed of 24 km h−1^{-1}. Stage 3: 5.0 km on a bearing of 210° (measured clockwise from north) at a constant speed of 30 km h−1^{-1}. Stage 4: straight-line flight from the end of Stage 3 to point P whose coordinates relative to O are (2.0 km E, 6.0 km N). This stage is completed in 6.0 min. Neglect the time spent in turning. (i) Calculate the time taken in each of the first three stages. (ii) Determine the Cartesian coordinates of the drone after Stage 3. (iii) Obtain the displacement vector of Stage 4 and find its magnitude. (iv) Find the speed of the drone during Stage 4. (v) Compute the total distance travelled, the net displacement from O to P, the total time of flight, and hence the magnitude and direction (with respect to the eastward axis) of the average velocity for the complete journey.
