Problem

A microscopic image of an engineered material reveals two distinct regions: • Region I: Some silver lattice sites are occupied by palladium atoms of similar size. • Region II: Very small boron atoms are situated in the octahedral holes between the silver lattice atoms while all lattice sites remain occupied by silver. Identify the type of alloy present in each region and explain, in one or two sentences, why Region II is expected to exhibit a higher yield strength than Region I in terms of lattice distortion and electron behavior.
