Problem

Two radioactive isotopes, X and Y, are available for use in an experiment. Their molar masses are M ⁣XM_{\!X} and M ⁣YM_{\!Y}, and their half-lives are T ⁣XT_{\!X} and T ⁣YT_{\!Y}, respectively. Equal masses mm of each isotope are prepared. (a) Derive an expression for the ratio of their initial activities AX/AYA_{X}/A_{Y} in terms of mm, M ⁣XM_{\!X}, M ⁣YM_{\!Y}, T ⁣XT_{\!X}, and T ⁣YT_{\!Y}. (b) Using m=1.0 gm = 1.0\,\text{g}, M ⁣X=60 g mol−1M_{\!X}=60\,\text{g mol}^{-1}, T ⁣X=4.0 hT_{\!X}=4.0\,\text{h}, M ⁣Y=30 g mol−1M_{\!Y}=30\,\text{g mol}^{-1}, and T ⁣Y=8.0 hT_{\!Y}=8.0\,\text{h}, compute the numerical value of AX/AYA_{X}/A_{Y}. Comment on which isotope would produce the higher count rate at the start of the experiment.
