Problem
Consider the galvanic cell based on the reaction below, operated with the listed ion concentrations. The solid iodine present is in its standard state.
2 Fe3+(aq, 0.100 M) + 2 I−(aq, 1.00 M) → 2 Fe2+(aq, 0.0100 M) + I2(s)
The standard cell potential at 298 K is 0.23 V. Constants: R = 8.314 J mol−1 K−1; F = 9.65 × 104 C mol−1.
(a) Derive, symbolically, an expression for the temperature at which the cell potential for this reaction becomes zero, assuming all concentrations remain fixed.
(b) Using your expression from part (a), determine the numerical temperature (in kelvins) at which the potential is predicted to reach zero under the stated concentration conditions.
(c) Evaluate whether that temperature is experimentally attainable without significantly perturbing the concentrations through side reactions or appreciable evaporation of solvent. Support your answer with chemical reasoning.
