Problem

A plastic cube of edge 10 cm10\,\text{cm} and mass 0.75 kg0.75\,\text{kg} is first released in fresh water at 4 ∘C4\,^{\circ}\text{C} (density 1000 kg m−31000\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}) and then in kerosene (density 800 kg m−3800\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}). (i) Calculate the weight of the cube. (ii) If the cube were completely submerged in water, what buoyant force would act on it? (iii) Will the cube actually float or sink in water? If it floats, find the height of the cube that remains above the water surface. (iv) Repeat parts (ii) and (iii) for kerosene.
