Problem

A 13 m long fire ladder is placed against a vertical wall on level ground so that the foot of the ladder is 2.5 m away from the wall. (i) Calculate the height above the ground reached by the top of the ladder. (ii) The ladder is then slid so that its foot is 0.6 m farther from the wall while its length remains unchanged. Determine the new height reached by the ladder. (iii) By how many metres does the top of the ladder descend because of this movement? Give your answer correct to one decimal place.
