Problem

In Searle's experiment, used to find Young's modulus of elasticity, the diameter of the experimental wire is d=0.05 cmd=0.05\,\text{cm}, measured by a scale of least count 0.001 cm0.001\,\text{cm}, and its length is l=110 cml=110\,\text{cm}, measured by a scale of least count 0.1 cm0.1\,\text{cm}. A weight of 50 N50\,\text{N} causes an extension of Δl=0.125 cm\Delta l=0.125\,\text{cm}, measured by a micrometer of least count 0.001 cm0.001\,\text{cm}. Find the maximum possible error in Young's modulus. The screw gauge and metre scale are free from zero error.
