Problem

Train P passes through a station at a constant speed of 10 m s−110\,\text{m s}^{-1} and thereafter continues to accelerate uniformly at 0.5 m s−20.5\,\text{m s}^{-2} along a straight track. Thirty seconds after P passes the station, train Q starts from rest at the same station and moves along the same track with a uniform acceleration of 1 m s−21\,\text{m s}^{-2}. (i) Derive, with appropriate equations, the expression that gives the time tt (measured from the instant Q starts) at which Q catches up with P. (ii) Using the derived expression, calculate the numerical value of tt. (iii) Find the distance from the station where the catch-up occurs. (iv) Determine the speeds of both trains at that instant.
