Problem

At 450 K the equilibrium constant for the homogeneous reaction H2(g)+I2(g)⇌2 HI(g)\text{H}_{2}(g)+\text{I}_{2}(g)\rightleftharpoons 2\,\text{HI}(g) is Kc=50.0K_{c}=50.0. A reaction vessel at 450 K is charged with the following initial concentrations: [H2_{2}]=0.20 M, [I2_{2}]=0.10 M, [HI]=2.00 M. (a) Calculate the reaction quotient QcQ_{c} for the mixture immediately after it is prepared. (b) State the direction in which the net reaction must proceed to reach equilibrium. (c) Briefly explain how the value of QcQ_{c} relative to KcK_{c} leads to the prediction you made in part (b).
