Problem

Two identical straight metallic rods X and Y, each of length ℓ\ell, move with equal speed vv through the same uniform magnetic field of magnitude BB. Rod X moves in a direction perpendicular to the field, while rod Y moves in a direction making an angle 30∘30^{\circ} with the field. (i) Without using numerical calculations, arrange the induced emfs in the two rods in descending order of magnitude and justify your answer. (ii) Explain qualitatively how the component of velocity relative to the magnetic field direction determines the induced emf in a moving conductor. (iii) Under what orientation of motion will a moving straight conductor experience zero induced emf? Give a reason.
