Problem

In a laboratory compound microscope, the focal lengths of the objective and eyepiece are fo=0.4 cmf_o=0.4\,\text{cm} and fe=2.0 cmf_e=2.0\,\text{cm} respectively. The microscope is built on a rigid tube of length 20 cm20\,\text{cm} measured between the principal planes of the two lenses. A transparent specimen of height 0.05 mm0.05\,\text{mm} is mounted on a slide. (i) The specimen is placed 0.60 cm0.60\,\text{cm} beyond the focal point of the objective. Locate the position of the real intermediate image measured from the objective. (ii) Keeping the objective fixed, determine the position of the eyepiece along the tube so that the final image is formed at infinity. (iii) Find the linear magnification produced by the objective. (iv) Hence calculate the angular magnifying power of the microscope for relaxed eye vision. (v) What will be the height of the final image viewed by the eye under these conditions?
