Problem
A series circuit consists of a resistor of resistance 40 Ω, an inductor of inductance 0.32 H and an unknown capacitor. The circuit is connected to an a.c. source of variable frequency whose r.m.s. voltage is kept at 20 V throughout the experiment. A student observes that the r.m.s. current becomes maximum at a frequency of 400 Hz.
(i) Calculate the value of the capacitance.
(ii) When the frequency is increased to 600 Hz, the r.m.s. current is found to be 0.25 A. Calculate the impedance of the circuit at 600 Hz and state whether the circuit behaves inductively or capacitively at this frequency.
