Problem

A block of mass 2 kg2\,\text{kg} lies on a smooth horizontal table. Two horizontal forces act simultaneously along the same straight line: 10 N10\,\text{N} to the right and 6 N6\,\text{N} to the left. (a) Part 1: (i) Calculate the net force acting on the block, stating its magnitude and direction. (b) Part 2: (ii) Are the applied forces balanced or unbalanced? Give a reason for your answer. (c) Part 3: (iii) If the block was initially at rest, predict and explain its subsequent motion under the action of the net force found in part (i). (d) Part 4: (iv) Is the net force obtained in part (i) a push or a pull on the block? Justify your choice.
