Problem

A charged particle enters a region of uniform magnetic field of magnitude BB with speed vv, making an angle α\alpha with the field direction. (i) Explain why the subsequent trajectory of the particle is a helix rather than a straight line or a circle. (ii) Keeping the speed vv and field magnitude BB fixed, describe qualitatively how the radius of the circular part of the motion and the pitch of the helix vary when the entry angle α\alpha is changed from 0∘0^{\circ} to 90∘90^{\circ}. State whether each quantity increases, decreases or remains unchanged with increasing α\alpha. (iii) Sketch the paths corresponding to α=0∘\alpha = 0^{\circ}, 30∘30^{\circ} and 90∘90^{\circ}, clearly indicating the relative sizes of radius and pitch in each case.
