Problem

Vectors p⃗=2i−3j+k\vec{p}=2\mathbf{i}-3\mathbf{j}+\mathbf{k} and q⃗=i+4j−2k\vec{q}=\mathbf{i}+4\mathbf{j}-2\mathbf{k} are fixed. A third vector is formed as r⃗=p⃗+p q⃗\vec{r}=\vec{p}+p\,\vec{q}, where pp is a real parameter. (i) Find the value of pp for which r⃗\vec{r} is perpendicular to p⃗−q⃗\vec{p}-\vec{q}. (ii) For the value of pp obtained in part (i), calculate ∣r⃗∣|\vec{r}|. (iii) Show that, for this value of pp, the vectors r⃗\vec{r} and q⃗\vec{q} are not parallel.
