Problem

Two blocks of masses m1=2.0 kgm_1=2.0\,\text{kg} and m2=3.0 kgm_2=3.0\,\text{kg} are connected by a rigid, lightweight rod so that the distance between their centers remains constant. They rest on a horizontal, frictionless surface. A constant horizontal force of magnitude F=10 NF=10\,\text{N} is applied to block  ⁣m1\!m_1 only, directed along the line joining the blocks, for a time interval of  Δt=2.0 s\,\Delta t = 2.0\,\text{s}. (a) Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the system’s center of mass while the force is applied. (b) Calculate the displacement of the center of mass during the 2.0 s interval. (c) For the same interval, determine the magnitude of the acceleration of each individual block and explain why they have that value.
