Problem

A straight conductor of length 0.40 m0.40\,\text{m} lies in a uniform magnetic field. When a current of 8.0 A8.0\,\text{A} flows through it, the conductor experiences a force of 0.96 N0.96\,\text{N}. (a) Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic field if the conductor is perpendicular to the field. (b) In a separate trial, the same conductor is placed so that it makes an angle θ\theta with the field while the current and field magnitude remain as in part (a). If the force observed is 0.48 N0.48\,\text{N}, find θ\theta. (c) In the second trial, the current flows vertically upward and the field points from east to west. State the direction of the force on the conductor.
