Problem

A boat initially at the origin of a river–bank coordinate system makes two successive crossings. First, it travels 50 m50\,\text{m} at an angle of 120∘120^{\circ} measured anticlockwise from the positive xx–axis. Immediately after that, it changes course and moves 30 m30\,\text{m} at an angle of −45∘-45^{\circ} (clockwise from the positive xx–axis). (i) Resolve each displacement into its xx– and yy–components. (ii) Find the boat’s final coordinates after the two crossings. (iii) Determine the magnitude and direction (with respect to the positive xx–axis) of the boat’s resultant displacement from the origin.
