Sulfur trioxide is manufactured via the equilibrium
2SO2(g)+O2(g)⇌2SO3(g)
At 700K the standard enthalpy change for this reaction is ΔH700∘=−197kJ. The molar heat capacities at constant pressure in the temperature range 700–900K are approximately constant with the following values:
Cp(SO2)Cp(O2)Cp(SO3)=41.9Jmol−1K−1=29.4Jmol−1K−1=49.6Jmol−1K−1
The equilibrium constant at 700K is Kp=1.3×104. A gas mixture at 900K has initial partial pressures PSO2=0.40atm, PO2=0.20atm, and PSO3=0.10atm in a container of fixed volume.
(a) Estimate the standard enthalpy change ΔH900∘ for the reaction at 900K using the heat-capacity data provided.
(b) Using your result from part (a), calculate the value of Kp at 900K.
(c) Determine Qp for the gas mixture at 900K and predict the direction in which the system will shift to attain equilibrium.
(d) Calculate the equilibrium partial pressures of all species at 900K. Clearly show the setup of any algebraic expressions used to solve for the equilibrium amounts.
