Problem

Three appliances are connected to the 220 V mains through separate branches of a parallel circuit: • Electric heater: 1000 W • Ceiling fan: 80 W • Fluorescent lamp: 40 W Answer the following questions, showing all working: (i) Calculate the current drawn by each appliance when it is switched ON. (ii) Determine the total current drawn from the mains when all three appliances operate simultaneously. (iii) The branch circuit is protected by a fuse. State the smallest standard fuse rating (in amperes) that will safely protect the circuit while allowing all three appliances to work together.
