Problem

An airplane’s airspeed (speed relative to the air) is 80 m/s. The pilot wishes to travel to a town that is located 60 km due north of the point of departure. A steady wind blows toward the east at 20 m/s. Answer the following, showing all work and including appropriate units. (a) If the pilot heads the plane due north, determine the airplane’s ground-velocity vector (magnitude and direction). (b) With the due-north heading of part (a), calculate how far east of the intended destination the airplane will be when it has traveled 60 km northward. (c) To arrive exactly over the destination, determine the compass heading (direction relative to north) the pilot must choose before takeoff. (d) Using the heading from part (c), calculate the time required to reach the destination.
