Problem
Consider a uniform thin circular disc of radius R and total mass M.
(i) Choose a suitable differential mass element lying in the plane of the disc and write an expression for its mass in terms of the surface mass density.
(ii) Write the integral expression (do not evaluate it) for the moment of inertia of the disc about an axis passing through its centre and perpendicular to its plane.
(iii) If the axis is instead a diameter of the disc, write the corresponding integral expression for the moment of inertia (evaluation not required).
