Problem

A ball is projected from level ground with an initial speed v0v_0 at an angle θ\theta above the horizontal. Neglect air resistance. (a) Write the expressions for the horizontal and vertical displacements of the ball as functions of time tt. Clearly identify the variables involved. (b) Eliminating tt, obtain an expression for the horizontal range RR of the projectile in terms of v0v_0, θ\theta and gg. (c) Show that RR attains its maximum value when the angle of projection satisfies θ=45∘\theta = 45^\circ. (d) Hence obtain a formula for the maximum horizontal range RmaxR_{\text{max}} and calculate its value when v0=20 m s−1v_0 = 20\,\text{m s}^{-1} and g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}. Give your answer to two significant figures.
