Problem

An ice puck of mass m = 0.20 kg slides across a large horizontal sheet of ice. A very light gust of wind exerts a constant horizontal force of 0.30 N westward on the puck, while kinetic friction between the puck and ice is negligible. At t = 0 the puck is at the origin and moving with velocity v⃗0=(4.0 ı^+3.0 ȷ^) m/s\vec v_0 = (4.0\,\hat\imath + 3.0\,\hat\jmath)\,\text{m/s}, where east is the +x direction and north is the +y direction. (a) Derive expressions for the x- and y-components of the puck’s velocity as functions of time for t ≥ 0. (b) Derive expressions for the puck’s position components x(t) and y(t) for t ≥ 0, choosing the origin as the initial position. (c) At t = 5.0 s determine the puck’s speed and the direction of its motion measured as an angle north of east. (d) On axes provided in your answer booklet, sketch qualitative graphs of (i) v_x versus t and (ii) v_y versus t for the interval 0 ≤ t ≤ 5.0 s. Clearly label important numerical values on each axis. (e) Discuss how the differing net forces in the x and y directions lead to the distinct behaviors shown in your velocity graphs.
