Problem

A point charge of −9.0 μC-9.0\,\mu\text{C} is located at point AA in the xx–yy plane. Points PP and QQ lie on a straight line that makes an angle of 45∘45^{\circ} with the positive xx-axis, at distances 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} and 1.00 m1.00\,\text{m}, respectively, from AA. Take k=9.0×109 N m2C−2k = 9.0\times10^{9}\,\text{N m}^2\text{C}^{-2}. (i) Calculate the electric-field vector at point PP in component form (Ex, Ey)(E_x,\,E_y). (ii) Calculate the electric-field vector at point QQ in component form (Ex, Ey)(E_x,\,E_y). (iii) Find the vector difference ΔE=EP−EQ\Delta \mathbf{E} = \mathbf{E}_P - \mathbf{E}_Q. Show algebraically that the magnitude of ΔE\Delta \mathbf{E} is proportional to (1r12−1r22)\left(\dfrac{1}{r_1^{2}} - \dfrac{1}{r_2^{2}}\right), where r1r_1 and r2r_2 are the distances 0.50 m0.50\,\text{m} and 1.00 m1.00\,\text{m}, respectively. Evaluate the numerical value of ∣ΔE∣|\Delta \mathbf{E}|.
