Problem

Car A and Car B are moving along the same straight road in the same direction. At t=0t = 0, Car A is 100 m ahead of Car B and both cars are travelling at 15 m s−1^{-1}. Starting at t=0t = 0, Car B accelerates uniformly at 2.0 m s−2^{-2}, while Car A continues at constant speed. (i) Write expressions for the displacements of Car A and Car B from Car B’s initial position as functions of time tt. (ii) Determine the time at which Car B overtakes Car A. (iii) Calculate the distance from Car B’s starting point at which the overtaking occurs. (iv) Find the speed of Car B at the instant it overtakes Car A.
