Problem
Read the following situations that occur on a sports field and answer the questions that follow:
(i) A cricket ball lying on the ground remains stationary until the bowler picks it up to bowl. What type of inertia does the ball possess in this state? Give a reason.
(ii) A hockey player hits a moving puck with her stick, causing the puck to travel faster in the same direction. Which type of inertia was overcome by the stick's force? Explain briefly.
(iii) A sprinter waiting on the starting blocks tends to fall backward when the race begins if the start is too sudden. Identify the inertia involved and explain why this happens.
(iv) For any one of the above cases, state how increasing the mass of the object would alter the observed effect, and justify your answer using Newton's First Law.
