Problem

A wooden block lies on a rough horizontal table. A student first pulls the block by a force F making an angle θ\theta above the horizontal and then pushes the same block by the same magnitude of force F but at the same angle θ\theta below the horizontal. Explain, with reasons, how each of the following quantities is affected when the mode of application is changed from pulling to pushing: (i) the normal reaction exerted by the table on the block, (ii) the maximum static frictional force that can act, (iii) the minimum additional horizontal force (if any) required to just set the block into motion in each case. Support your reasoning with clear statements connecting the quantities mentioned above.
