Problem

Two low-friction carts, A and B, travel on separate straight, horizontal tracks that cross at right angles at point O. Cart A (mass 1.5 kg) moves due east toward O at a constant speed of 2.0 m/s. Simultaneously, Cart B (mass 2.0 kg) moves due north toward O at a constant speed of 1.5 m/s. The carts reach point O at the same instant but pass without interacting because the tracks are at different heights. Assume friction is negligible and the only external forces acting are vertical support forces that do not affect horizontal motion. (a) For each cart, state the magnitude and direction of its momentum vector just before reaching point O. (b) On your response page, construct a scaled head-to-tail diagram representing the momenta of carts A and B. Based on your diagram, determine the direction of the total momentum of the two-cart system relative to due east. Explain your reasoning. (c) Describe physically what the total momentum vector you obtained in part (b) represents for the two-cart system, and predict the qualitative motion of a single object of total mass 3.5 kg that would have this same momentum.
