Problem

An aircraft can fly in still air with a speed of 300 km h−1300\,\text{km h}^{-1}. It is required to travel from city PP to city QQ that lies 500 km500\,\text{km} due north of PP. A steady wind of 80 km h−180\,\text{km h}^{-1} is blowing from west to east throughout the flight. (i) At what angle with the north (measured west of north) should the pilot set the aircraft’s nose so that it reaches QQ directly? (ii) Calculate the time of flight under these conditions. (iii) Suppose the wind direction suddenly changes to blow from the south at the same speed when the aircraft has covered half the distance. Keeping the same heading as in part (i), determine by how many kilometres the aircraft would miss city QQ when it finally lands.
