Problem

Two variables xx and yy depend on time tt. At a particular instant t=t0t=t_{0}, measurements give dxdt=−4 units/s\dfrac{dx}{dt}=-4\,\mathrm{units/s} and dydt=6 units/s\dfrac{dy}{dt}=6\,\mathrm{units/s}. (i) Find the instantaneous rate of change of yy with respect to xx at t=t0t=t_{0}. (ii) Interpret the sign of this value in terms of how yy varies as xx changes at that instant. (iii) If at t=t0t=t_{0} the point (x,y)(x,y) lies in the first quadrant, explain whether, immediately after t0t_{0}, the point will move towards or away from the yy–axis.
