Problem

A steel gas cylinder of volume 5 L5\,\text{L} has a mass of 2.50 kg2.50\,\text{kg} when empty. When filled with an unknown gas at room conditions, its mass becomes 2.57 kg2.57\,\text{kg}. (i) Calculate the mass of the gas contained in the cylinder. (ii) Convert the volume of the cylinder to m3\text{m}^{3}. (iii) Determine the density of the unknown gas in kg m−3\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. (iv) The density of air at the same conditions is approximately 1.29 kg m−31.29\,\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. Is the unknown gas lighter or heavier than air? State your reason based on the value obtained in part (iii).
