Problem
A golfer tees off from an elevated tee that is 5.0m above the level of the green. The ball is struck with an initial speed of 35m/s at an angle of 40∘ above the horizontal and eventually comes to rest on the green. Neglect air resistance and take g=9.8m/s2.
(a) Calculate the time required for the ball to reach the highest point of its trajectory.
(b) Determine the total time of flight from tee to green.
(c) Compute the ratio of the descent time (from the highest point to landing) to the ascent time (from launch to the highest point).
(d) Find the magnitude of the ball’s vertical velocity component immediately before landing and compare it to the magnitude of the initial vertical component. Explain any difference or similarity observed.
