Problem

A composite block is prepared by embedding a lead piece of mass 0.6 kg0.6\,\text{kg} completely inside a wooden cuboid of volume 5.5×10−3 m35.5\times10^{-3}\,\text{m}^{3}. The density of wood is 600 kg m−3600\,\text{kg m}^{-3} and the density of lead is 11 400 kg m−311\,400\,\text{kg m}^{-3}. The block is gently released in freshwater. (a) Calculate the total mass of the composite block. (b) Determine the average density of the composite block. (c) State whether the block will float or sink in water, giving a suitable calculation. (d) If it floats, find the volume of water displaced and hence the fraction of the block’s volume that remains submerged.
