Problem

Let SS be a sample space and let A,B⊆SA, B\subseteq S be events with A∪B=SA\cup B = S and A∩B=∅A\cap B = \emptyset. (i) Prove that AA and BB are complementary events. (ii) Conversely, prove that if BB is the complement of AA, then A∪B=SA\cup B = S and A∩B=∅A\cap B = \emptyset. (iii) In the experiment of drawing one card at random from a standard deck of 52 cards, let A=A = “the card drawn is red” and B=B = “the card drawn is black”. Verify that AA and BB satisfy the conditions proved in parts (i) and (ii). (iv) Calculate P(A)P(A), P(B)P(B) and P(A∩B)P(A\cap B) for this experiment.
