Problem

Consider a particle moving in the first quadrant along the ellipse 9x2+4y2=369x^2 + 4y^2 = 36, where xx and yy are measured in centimeters and tt in seconds. At the instant when the particle has xx–coordinate 2 cm2\,\text{cm}, its xx–coordinate is decreasing at a rate of 3 cm/s3\,\text{cm/s}. (1) Part 1: (a) Derive a general relationship among xx, yy, dxdt\frac{dx}{dt}, and dydt\frac{dy}{dt} that must be satisfied at every instant of the motion. (2) Part 2: (b) Using the result from part (a), determine dydt\frac{dy}{dt} (in cm/s) when x=2x = 2 and y>0y > 0. (3) Part 3: (c) Calculate the instantaneous slope dydx\frac{dy}{dx} at that point and interpret its sign in terms of the particle’s vertical direction of motion.
