Problem

A ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of 20 m/s. Take the upward direction as positive and the acceleration due to gravity as −9.8 m/s2-9.8\,\text{m/s}^2. Consider only the upward journey until the ball momentarily comes to rest at the highest point. (a) Sketch the velocity–time graph for the ball from the instant it leaves the thrower’s hand until it reaches the highest point. (b) From your graph, determine the time taken for the ball to reach its highest point. (c) Using the area under the graph, calculate the maximum height reached by the ball above the point of projection. (d) Verify the height obtained in part (c) by using a suitable kinematic equation of motion.
